What is a VIN?
A VIN - vehicle identification number - is a unique mix of seventeen numbers and letters specific to each Nissan. This number defines certain characteristics like its body style, its engine size, model type, year, transmission type, color, etc..
Where can I find my VIN?
It is attached to the top of the dashboard on the driver's side, on a small metal plate; you can easily view it through the windshield. Note that all vehicles are required by law to have the VIN located there. If not, it has either undergone a repair, or, in extreme instances, is a stolen vehicle.
Q. Is this a safety recall?
A. Yes, a stop sale is currently in effect.
Q. What is the reason for this safety recall?
A. This is due to a supplier quality issue. It's possible that an issue with the mechanical binding could cause the secondary hood latch to remain opened. This could cause an issue if the driver inadvertently engages the main hood latch, especially while looking to open the fuel filler door release.
Q. What is the possible effect of this condition?
A. On some of the affected vehicles, if a customer inadvertently actuates the hood release (located right next to the fuel filler door release on the lower part of the dashboard), the secondary hood latch may not hold the hood latch entirely closed as designed and the hood may come open while vehicle is in motion.
Q. What will be the corrective action for this voluntary safety recall campaign?
A. Nissan dealers will replace the hood latch and confirm secondary latch engagement.
Q. How is this recall campaign different than the previous recall?
A. This is a new remedy which has been amended to the previous recall. Even if the previous recall was performed, please make an appointment with Coggin Nissan on Atlantic if you receive notification that your vehicle is affected - even if you had your vehicle serviced due to the previous recall.
Q. How long will the corrective action take?
A. It should take about an hour. However, please keep in mind that this depends on our work schedule for the day.Check with Coggin Nissan on Atlantic for more info.
Q. Will a rental vehicle be provided while Coggin Nissan on Atlantic is servicing the vehicle?
A. No. However, we do feature a shuttle service; please inform us in advance if you are in need of it.
Q. When will vehicle owners be notified?
A. If your vehicle is affected, you will receive communication in the mail from Nissan beginning the week of February 15, 2016.
Q. Are parts readily available?
A. Beginning January 27, Nissan will begin sending multiple shipments to dealers so they will be able to perform the service. Parts shipment information will be provided at that time.
Q. Can the hood open while driving if the primary hood latch is engaged?
A. No. The primary hood latch works properly as designed. This condition occurs if you inadvertently open the primary hood latch by pulling the hood release lever. In this condition, the secondary hood latch may not be engaged which could allow the hood to open while driving.
Q. Is there anything owners can do to mitigate the condition?
A. Check the hood to make sure it is securely fastened and latched.
Q. Is my vehicle safe to drive?
A. Yes. However, Contact Coggin Nissan on Atlantic to have your vehicle inspected if you receive a letter in the mail. Nissan recommends that you check to ensure the hood is fully closed and latched. Make sure you are pulling the fuel release lever, not the hood release lever.
Q. Is there any charge for the repair?
A. No. The repair is free of charge. You will not be charged for parts and labor, either.
Q. I bought my Nissan at another dealership. Will Coggin Nissan on Atlantic perform the repair?
A. Yes - any authorized Nissan dealer will be able to perform the repair for you, regardless of where you purchased the vehicle. For Consumer Affairs: Please inform us of the dealer where you would like to have the corrective action completed.
Q. I have lost confidence in the vehicle. Will Nissan replace or repurchase the vehicle?
A. Since we will confirm correct operation of the latch once it is installed, there will be no basis for Coggin Nissan on Atlantic to replace or repurchase your Altima.
Q. What model year vehicles are involved?
A. Nissan Altimas from model year 2013-2015 are the ones being affected. However, the recall is for a select number of Altima's from those model years. You will be notified by mail if yours is included.
Q. Are you experiencing this condition on any other Nissan (or Infiniti) models?
A. No.
