Safe Driving With Signal Shield

According to the CDC, each day in the United States alone, over eight people are killed and 1,161 are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. A quick look down to reach for your coffee, a glance in the back seat to grab your purse to paying more attention on changing the radio are all examples of a driver being distracted. Let's not forget the connected lifestyles we live to where our smartphones are constantly bombarding us with a variety of information that seems so urgent for some of us to answer to. Behold, Nissan has created a solution for distraction!

Nissan has created the solution called Signal Shield, to help protect drives from their smartphones while driving. The Signal Shield is currently only available in the Nissan Juke model, but could become a thing of the future and help save more lives due to distracted driving.

A simple Faraday cage, is built inside the Juke's armrest, and once you place your smartphone in the compartment and close the lid, any cellular, Bluetooth or wifi electromagnetic signals are blocked. When the lid is opened, the phone will resume working normally. Music stored on the phone can still be accessed through a USB connection, so it doesn't defeat the purpose of taking out CD players and doesn't restrict you to listening to your local radio stations or Sirius XM.

This creation isn't the hottest piece of technology out in the auto industry right now, but it definitely is getting an A+ due to the increase of driving security. Small distractions can sometimes be the cause of the biggest disaster, and Nissan is trying to put an end to it slowly but surely. The concept attempts to make it easy for drivers to connect and disconnect their phones from the outside world.

"Nissan produces some of the safest cars on the road today, but we are always looking at new ways to improve the wellbeing of our customer," says Alex Smith, Managing Director of Nissan GB. "The Nissan Signal Shield concept presents one possible solution for giving drivers the choice to remove all smartphone distractions while driving."

Buyers of the Nissan Juke, with its Signal Shield compartment must also being willing and welcome to the idea to make sure they utilize this amazing safety feature. This means keeping the compartment shut while the vehicle is on at all times and not sneaking it out or popping the lid to the compartment to restore the phones connection. The Signal Shield can only do its job if the driver is disciplined to follow directions.

With Signal Shield, the Faraday cage lining the inside of the Nissan Juke's armrest prevents drivers' cellphones from receiving cellular, Bluetooth, or Wifi signals

Are you excited for this new feature in the Juke and possibly future Nissan vehicles?
